Expression, nuance and personality is perfectly captured in the works of one of UnderArt Gallery’s favourite artists, Amanda Mcgahan. Her sculptures draw attention and they do quite literally stop people in the street. Our window always gets a lot of visitors when Amanda’s work is on display.
Amanda was born in the UK, and after some free-spirited traveling adventures and shenanigans she migrated to Australia in 2004. The tropical north of Queensland captured her heart and she chose to settle in Cairns in 2010 with her young family.
Is an artist born or made? Well, that one may always be up for debate, but Amanda says that from a very young age she was a keen observer of life and that she was always sketching, drawing and painting. She attended TAFE in 2012 where she completed her visual art qualifications.
The clay sculptures that she now works with predominantly evolve from a sketch and from there they brought to life as she builds forms with slabs, coils and pinch pots. She uses layers of under glazes until the work looks just right.
The cheeky, fun and good-natured works of art are gaining quite a following. In 2019 Amanda had two solo exhibitions of her art and 2020 will likely see her profile continue to grow.
