The Beauty of Small Talk

Artist: Craig Martin

Medium: Water colour

Size: 920 x 720mm including frame

“I love that she is so tiny and the whale is exaggeratedly big in comparison. I think this means that we all have something to say but sometimes, well for me anyway, when I want to say something to someone I see as of much greater importance I often feel the need to adopt certain character traits so that I might be of interest or also appear important. This painting may have come from the idea that I don’t have to be anyone but myself when sharing words with anyone. As this girl in the painting talks to the whale she is naked, vulnerable, she doesn’t use anything to enhance her voice because her voice as it is, is just perfect for what she truly needs to say. The whale matches her authenticity and gently listens while she shares whatever it is that she could be sharing with him.”
